Touring the Mediterranean

This is what I have been reading lately. I didn’t know who Paul Theroux was, but I got this book because of my friend Grace. We both happened to be happily lost and walking aimlessly around when we found this little thrift bookstore. I didn’t even get the name of the store because when we entered the establishment the staffs were already packing up and we just rammed through whatever is left on their sale table. If my memory hasn’t failed me yet, I am pretty sure that the store is just a couple of blocks away from the mint museum.

So the thing was, as we were reading and skimming through books Grace softly lifted this book and gave to me. I didn’t put it down, and didn’t even skim through the few pages I just went on sandwiching the book with my inner arm. Long story short, I went to the cashier and paid for a Michael Chabon book and this Paul Theroux one. All in all it cost me 8 dollars or less for the two finds. Believe me it was the same sensation of elation when in that same day when Grace and I took a short break from our exhibit hopping at the Singapore Museum only to find ourselves at the lobby of the Cathay Cineplex rummaging through make up. Yes, you heard it…make up! In retrospect, I was thinking how could you possibly go from Van Gogh and Alfred Stieglitz, to a complete turn around of NYX, MAC, Coastal Scents, China Glaze, OPI and Essie – Believe me I am weird out myself.

Ok back to the book, I must say Paulie got me hooked. I want to go on my own Mediterranean tour myself. There’s something about his writing that enamors me. He is so antipatiko… He writes about his travels but his approach is much more personal so some might be offended when he talks about his experience/s regarding a certain place. But then, at the beginning of the book he said that this is his travel book he can write whatever he wants, which I thinks makes perfect sense. Anyway, I am still in my early pages so there’s still more to experience.

I’m in a rut lately and I’m getting impatient and hostile around people and especially myself which is why I don’t mingle ever so often lately to inhibit myself from causing further damage or run amok at the slight provocation from people and stuff. I am so bored, I will seriously start eating my hair because of boredom. I carried on too many hobbies, but none of them seems to please me nowadays…What is wrong with me??? Anyways, the book got me thinking that maybe I should travel alone, besides I always find it therapeutically satisfying to walk and discover things on my own – free from anyone’s definition of what is going on at the very moment I am experiencing and discovering things as it is. It is so much easier finding my true self that way, just myself and my thoughts -uncontrolled, unfazed and hysterically unrestrained just the way it supposed to be.

GLAMAZON

Last Sunday has been the day of culmination. After a month of fixing schedules, finally it came to fruition and I couldn’t be any happier and pleased with the results.

I am bias if I say that Sienna is an ultimate muse, but one look at her pictures and just simply seeing her delivers her own brand of talent in front of our lenses will vanish any notion that she is not. The whole concept of our shoot was loosely based on a visual of Kate Moss. Sienna reminds me of Kate Moss in pictures as they both have this sense of Stoic Calm (for lack of a better word) in their faces.

The dresses and accessories used in the shoot was provided by our uber-fashionista friend Jan.

Here are the products I used to put the whole look together:

FACE

Foundation – AVON ideal flawless in Sand Beige
Contour and Highlight – Coastal Scents Contour palette
Concealer – Coastal Scents Concealer Palette
Powder – MAC Select Sheer in NC30
Blush – Coastal Scents blush palette

EYES
Base – MAC powerpoint pencil in engraved
Eyeshadow – The Body Shop Shimmer cubes palette 12 (I used twilight black)
Mascara – Clinique high impact mascara in black
Eyelashes – Sasa eyelashes and DUO eyelash adhesive
Liner – Maybelline Hyper Sharp eyeliner in black

LIPS
           NYX lip liner in Natural
           Clinique superbalm moisturizing gloss

I have accentuated Sienna’s cheekbones and strategically in place highlights on top of her nose and above the cheeks and the cupids bow as well to give the illusion of fuller upper lips.

Here are some of the photos I took and others are from other talented photographers.

The Flight of the Swan

It was a blessed Saturday noon when Retratistas gathered at the newly christened flat (otherwise known as STUDIO 81) of our dear Kuya Jun. As usual, we all come hunger stricken that by the time we reached the flat we were ransacking the fridge for anything munchable that can sustain us. It was so bad that we re-heated the one week old party food from past week house warming party. And yes, we ate it with gusto. And no, none of us suffered from food poisoning or from frequent bathroom breaks.

Studio 81 came equipped with lights and lengthy fabrics for backdrops and of course shutterbugs who are as hungry and anxious to shoot away.

Our inspiration for the shoot is Black Swan, we have done makeup test a couple of months ago, but because of our erratic schedules we had to wait until we can synchronize our time  to finally give it a go.
FACE
§      Foundation – Revlon Photo Ready in Shell
§      Contour and Highlight – Coastal Scent Contour and Highlight Palette. I used grey coloured highlighter from the Coastal Scents palette. The grey colour highlighter was mixed with brownish contour to help emphasize the hallows on her face. The white highlighter with a bit shimmer was used on her shoulders and areas on her face I want to highlight.
§      Concealer – Coastal Scents Concealer Palette
§      Powder – Translucent powder to pale out her complexion. I used a bit of matt white eye make up as well to make her skin appear even whiter

EYES
§      Base – POP eyeliner all over the lids to act as base for the eye makeup as I will be working on dark eye shadows.
§      Eyeshadow – Matt black eye shadow  from the Coastal Scents palette and shimmery grey cream makeup
§      Eyeliner – POP eyeliner in Black and Maybelline gel eyeliner
§      Mascara – Clinique High Impact Mascara in Black
§      SASA Eyelashes
§      DUO eyelash adhesive

LIPS
§      AVON Ultra Luxury Lip Liner in Wildberry mixed with some purple eye makeup to intensify the colour

TIPS
§      I used white eyeliner to trace the eye makeup. In that way I can have it as prĂ©cised as I can.

Jan lived up to the theme, she was every bit what we wanted for the shoot as evident by the photos.

Thanks for the photographers for letting me use their work.  I will post  mine soon. Hehehe!

Shoot For A Cause

I had the pleasure of joining a grand affair yesterday. Shifter’s: “Shoot for a Cause”. It was an amazing experience and, though it was tiring I think everyone had fun. You can’t beat that feeling of satisfaction knowing you were able to contribute to a good cause and had absolute time doing it. Fort Canning on a bright Sunday morning was teeming with photographers who all came imbibed with the spirit of camaraderie for a fellow Filipino who is in need of help. They didn’t know that in exchange of their support they will end their day with beautiful pictures, laughter and great moments.

It was such a high to have been given the task of doing hair and make up on some of the gorgeous muses of the day. I didn’t say model because as far as I am concerned, I totally believe that these ladies have certainly helped everyone that day to let out their creative juices all in the name of photography, just as what a muse would’ve done to an artist. The ladies delivered their own brand of magic that day and it was palpable to everyone present.

As I am not a hurrying person when it comes to makeup and hair, so it came as no surprise that the days leading up to the event I was anxiety ridden. But comes the day itself, it became a breeze as I have before me three gorgeous and quite entertaining ladies to work on. It was a blast doing their make up.

As it has become habit of mine to share techniques and products I used for photoshoots. Certainly, this is not the time to deviate from all of that as I am excited to showcase my creation done to these three uber-fantastic gals.

I cannot say enough the power and beauty of highlight and contour. You can see it makes so much difference. The muses are all given enough highlight for the camera to pick up and contour to outline and give shadowy effect.

BODY
Erika was wearing shorts so I used ELF bronzer to give her legs a healthy glow and to help light reflect.

Tips: On Junnie and Erika I used dark eyeshadows and in order to minimize fall out I used a base before putting on their shadows. The base helps the shadows to stick thus minimizing fall out. And it is also helpful to pack in shadows to make sure that it sticks, just make sure that you blend it well after. Also, I tried not to put foundation first or if I did I put it very lightly since I am working with dark eyeshadows. So in case there would be fall out it will be easier to clean after.

Anyways, here are some of the photos I took of them and some were by other photographers.

All Hail The Egyptian Queen

So proud of our little sisterette on her very first debut as a full-pledged model. It took as one month to mobilize the whole production due to schedule conflicts, but as seen below its all worth the wait. I am super excited at the other photographers photos of her. I’m sure they have done a better job in taking pictures. Celyn is one of those people that will be a MUA favourite, she never, ever complains. She won’t tell you that her neck is sore because its taking me a lifetime to perfect the gel liner I’m putting on…She’s that dedicated to the craft.

I used several items to complete this look. As she already have good skin, it was easy for me to do the rest. A little tweaking here and there and, Voila! We have in our presence an Egyptian Queen.

These are the products I used on her:

FACE:
Foundation – Revlon Photo Ready Foundation in Early Tan
Bronzer – For highlight and to make her a golden beauty. I used ELF bronzer
Cheeks – I used Coastal Scents Blusher Palette
Contour – Coastal Scents Contour Palette
Concealer – Concealer Palette from Coastal Scents
Powder – MAC Select Sheer in NC30

EYES:
Eyeshadow – I used ELF cream shadow in butter pecan to help the gold pigments to stick.
Liner – POP eyeliner in black. And Maybelline gel eyeliner.
Mascara – Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara in Black
False Eyelashes – From Sasa and DUO eyelash adhesive

LIPS:
For Base I used a concealer on her lips to blank out the colour and to act as a base for the gold eyeshadow to stick. I conditioned the lips after with my trusty lip balm Rosebud Salve, which I think everyone should have.

The beauty of Highlight and Contour

For better resolution, please visit my flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/75679257@N00/

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of learning on how to take photographs with a vintage and classy touch. And, I was also given the opportunity to paint the models faces.

Now I finally appreciate tutorials about highlight and contour.  It is mostly done on professional photo shoots. Contour and highlight if done well will give the best results.
It served me well on my recent photo shoot (I like to think that way, hehehe!). I used highlighter / illuminator in areas where sunlight hits to emphasize and give them a natural glow. I strategically applied highlighter on top of the cheekbone, bridge if the nose, top of the jaw line, top of the brown and top of the brow bone. As for contour, I used two shades darker than the skin tone to give the effect of shadows. I use contour just below the cheekbones, temples, below the jawline and I also outline the nose.

Products used on Sienna:

-         Revlon Photo Ready in Medium Beige (This product is nice to use on photo shoots)
-         Vichy Thermal Water (Used to set and keep the make up in place)
-         Coastal Scents Palette version 2 – I used the blue iridescent eye shadow and used the dark brown for contouring and the white highlighter.
-         MAC select sheer in NC30
-         NYX eye shadow base in skin tone (It helps the eye shadow to stick and helps the colour to come out)
-         The Body Shop Shimmer Cubes Palette 12 (I used twilight black, its actually a good dupe or substitute for MAC’s black tied eye shadow).
-         Maybelline gel liner in black
-         Paul & Joe face color for the apples of the cheek
-         Rimmel sexy curves mascara in black
-         Avon Ultra Moisture Rich Sheer Lipstick in Sheer Buff
-         Clinique  superbalm moisturizing gloss
-         Sasa eyelashes in 611
-         DUO eyelash adhesive

So, that’s my 2 cents…
